IP Gateways - Connecting IP to traditional phone systems
An IP gateway is a device that connects an IP network to the Public Switched
Telephone Network (PSTN). Typically a gateway will have four or more FXO or FXS analog ports or 1 - 4 digital T1/E1 ports as well as Ethernet connectivity.
The primary function of an IP gateway is to bridge analog or proprietary digital phone equipment to IP networks. Responsibilities of an IP gateway include compression/decompression,
packetization, call routing, and control signaling. Additional features may
include interfaces to external controllers, such as Gatekeepers or
Softswitches, billing systems, and network management systems.
